The Tempest Series

“Paula Stoeke's work explores the territory between the visceral sensation of landscape and the transformation of abstraction. Her canvases bring the emotional content of a storm - both internal and external - into sharper view. They exude a warmth that emanates often from the painting's core, employing vivid color and carved pockets of depth.

The images connote a vastness relating sometimes to the cosmos, and at others the patient shimmering of water's reflection. In this body of work, her handling of the pigments has evolved from earlier series to a more loose approach, while still integrating a drive for compositional unity and organization. This gives The Tempest Series paintings an appealing combination of vibrancy and calm.”  - C. Stewart, Art Collections, Inc.

"Through much of this series I painted without brushes, using my hands and fingers. It was a closer connection with the canvas, the simple pushing of color and tactile blending.  The resulting images give me a feeling of disruption leading to resolution. And that I've lived in, visited, these spaces myself physically."
